Targa MC

ONE of the world’s most exotic supercars is on its way for Targa Tasmania.

Queenslander Tony Quinn, who won Targa in 2009 and 2011, is shipping his $600,000 McLaren F1 650S to the state to compete in the six-day, 1835km tarmac rally starting in Launceston on Monday and finishing in Hobart the following Saturday.

Targa has attracted some of the world’s most exotic marques during its 24 years — Ferrari, Lamborghini, BMW, Maserati, Porsche, Jaguar, Mercedes, Aston Martin, Audi and a Pagani Zonda. It will be the first McLaren.

Owned by 57-year-old Quinn, a Gold Coast pet food millionaire and the man who resurrected Darrell Lea chocolates, the black McLaren is being shipped from his New Zealand motor-racing circuit, Highlands Motorsport Park, near Queenstown.

The McLaren was built under the same roof as the McLaren Formula One cars of grand prix stars Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.

For the technically minded, Quinn’s road-going McLaren has a carbon-fibre chassis and is powered by a mid-mounted 3.8-litre V8 twin-turbo engine that develops 478kW of power.

It goes from 0-100km/h in three seconds flat and boasts a top speed of 333km/h.

Quinn won’t get anywhere near that speed in Targa.giphy

“I’ve only driven it twice,” he said.

“It’s pretty cool to drive. It’s very powerful and very fast.

“It’s a very special car.

“I’m going to drive it conservatively in Targa as a bit of a test because next year is the 25th anniversary event, so we’re getting it ready for that.”

Quinn has entered the McLaren in the Showroom two-wheel-drive category and will team with his long-time navigator Naomi Tillett.

A field of 223 cars will tackle this year’s event.tumblr_n3omirx5Jn1qd8w33o1_500

They will be on display at Macquarie No. 2 wharf in Hobart next Friday night.
